My First Solo Show!

I'm excited to announce and invite you to my first solo show. Opening night February 19th at Van Eaton Galleries. New original work including paintings and charcoal drawings. Here's a little blurb on what the show is about.

The concept behind Persistence of Vision is eloquent in its simplicity. What is poetic about the use of the term “Persistence” is that it does not only evoke tenacity and endurance but it also means continuance of an effect after the removal of its cause. All art with real impact would lend itself to this definition. Ruel achieves this by what drives him; his two worlds of Art and Family. He once thought that these separate lives drifted in-parallel like infinite rays, but his latest work now demonstrates that these worlds are twisting and converging into a double helix. The inspiration that feeds his genesis well of imagination, from his daughters, wife, friends, family to daydreams and heartbreak all find their ways inter-meshed on canvas like ivy up a brick wall…

The word “Vision” is more abstract as it is not the standard definition of simply looking at an object. Yet it goes beyond the idea of just having a very keen mind’s eye. When Ruel puts brush to canvas he sees the future. He sees the universe before him and he can control it at will. With the flick of his wrist he can unfold reality and make our world a brighter place. He is a Vision dealer… This show at the Van Eaton Galleries allows you to sample the worlds derived from his seemingly limitless Vision.

Andrew Wyeth one of the most celebrated artist died in his sleep Friday morning at his home in Philadelphia. The master painter was 91 years old. He's been on of my heroes in painting. We got to visit the Brandywine Museum few years ago and got to see the original illustrations of his work. My wife and I were lucky enough to take a tour of his father's (N.C. Wyeth) home and studio in Chadds Ford, PA where he grew up. It was amazing and all inspiring to see history in that light. Here's one of my favorite paintings of his that I got to see at the MOMA in NYC. Thanks for the inspiration.

Its was awesome to be involved with this show. I've been a fan of the Beasties ever since I used to skate back in the late 80's. A ton of talented artist involved. The part of the proceeds go to the Gramarcy Housing Project. The opening last night was a blast! It was super packed and a lot of the paintings sold. Including the ones I painted below.

Here's a painting I did for my secret santa (cheryl). Our friends George and Cheryl went to Buenos Aires this year. They visited this amazing library(National Library of the Argentine Republic) in the style of brutalistic architecture design. This painting was fun! It took about 6 hours to crank it out.

Kung Fu Panda comes out on dvd tomorrow. Along with it is the short film I got to work on called Secrets of the Furious Five. The adventure continues as Po finds himself teaching the art of kung fu to a bunch of anxious bunnies. They learn that kicking butt is just a small part of kung fu.

They are having a screening tomorrow at Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood and the crew was invited to check it out. So we are taking our little one to see her first animated film on the big screen.

Cool interview with the Elmo and puppeteer Kevin Clash. He makes a great point when people say he's the voice of Elmo, but he actually does everything. The voice, acting and performance. There is just something so simple and believable about the character even though he's just sitting there. He's worked and learned from the best Jim Henson and Frank Oz.

He was deployed out to Iraq with the U.S. Marines as part of the medic infantry and he retired out of the U.S. Navy about a year ago. He's been dreaming about getting this tattoo done on his arm for a while. So, I'm really honored to do this design for him.

Just watching the old Tom and Jerry cartoons just sparks up nostalgia. I enjoyed them as a kid cuz they were just fun to watch. Now they are even more entertaining. The guys and gals that created this stuff just wanted to put as much gags as they can in a short period of time and have some what of a storyline, and they did it without any characters talking. More importantly it has great energy and it all communicates! If you watch some of the stuff they did with those characters... great imagination.

Here's a drawing I did last month while the oil was drying for the paintings below. I taught an advanced life drawing class at the Art Institute and we just finished the quarter week ago. It was my first time teaching and it was a really nerve racking fun experience. I had a pretty small enough class that I got to focus a lot more on each student. Our model was nice enough to let us shoot reference photos for the final, so I decided to do a really finished piece. This quarter I'm teaching 2d and 3d animation classes.

We picked up a new table made of real wood so my wife was going to throw it away, but I decided to unscrew the legs and gesso the surface. This one is done in oil and it measures 22" x 36".

Caught the Beastie Boys show last night at the Hard Rock Hotel inThe Joint. Before they started their tour in Asia. Special guest appearances by Money Mark and Alfredo Ortiz, and of course Mix Master Mike. The show was sold out, luckily my wife came up on some last minute tickets. Awesome birthday! My wife got tickets again to another show. We caught Jurassic 5 at the House of Blues last night. No sign of DJ Cut Chemist though, but they still rocked the house. Dope beats, positive rhymes, entertaining performance = Hip-Hop!

A Tribe Called Quest is back together and touring. Qtip/The Abstract, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad even Jarobi White was there... which was the fourth member of the group... he split after the first album. We saw them on Friday at the Red Rock Hotel Casino of all places. No new album though. The last single they had out was in 1998! I read in an interview with Ali Shaheed Mohammed that they have one more album in their contract with Jive Record, but the group felt a bit disrespected about the offer. I dont know why the have a very solid following. Hands down my favorite album is The Low End Theory! I rememeber having that tape in high rotation in my car. Yes folks! I just dated myself. I used to rock tapes in my pull-out car stereo. Anyway, the show was awesome! If they're comin' to your city make sure to peep them out. Support real hip hop! Here's the tour dates info.

Saw these at South Coast Casino down the street from my house. I thought it was a pretty F' ed up way to attract kids to wanna gamble in the future. Or geeks like me to lose money at the casino, instead of the comic book and toy shops.

"Somebody's gonna get a hurt real bad!" This guy is hilarious! I just saw his latest stand up on Comedy Central. I guess the dvd is now on sale. A bunch of us saw him perform a while back at U.C.L.A.
